Done with cortisone shots that don't last? Focused shockwave therapy finally gives chronic tendon and soft tissue injuries what they need to heal

No surgery. No needles. No downtime. Life Chiropractic Center · Post Falls, Idaho

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Tendons and connective tissue have notoriously poor blood supply — which is exactly why injuries there heal so slowly, and why rest alone often isn’t enough. Focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) works by delivering targeted acoustic energy deep into the injured tissue. Those sound waves trigger a cascade of biological responses: new blood vessel formation, collagen remodeling, and a reduction in calcification. Essentially, shockwave restarts the healing process your body started but couldn’t finish. The key word is focused. Unlike radial shockwave devices — which scatter energy over a broad area — our focused unit concentrates high-energy pulses precisely at the tissue depth where they’re needed. That’s the same technology used in clinical research and hospital-based sports medicine programs. Most patients notice improvement within one to three sessions.

Conditions We Treat

Shockwave therapy is clinically supported for a wide range of stubborn soft tissue conditions, including:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Calcific Shoulder Tendinopathy
  • Shin Splints
  • Other tendinopathies
Shockwave works especially well for patients who have already tried cortisone injections, physical therapy, or rest — and haven’t gotten lasting relief. If that sounds like you, there’s a good chance you’re a strong candidate.

What To Expect At Your Session

Your first visit starts with a brief consultation. We will review your history, perform an examination, confirm whether you’re a good candidate for shockwave, and identify the exact treatment site. The session itself takes about 10–15 minutes. A handheld applicator is pressed gently against the skin over the injured area. You’ll feel a rhythmic pulsing sensation — most patients describe it as firm pressure, occasionally intense over the most inflamed tissue. No anesthesia is needed and there’s no recovery time afterward. Most conditions respond to a series of 6-8 sessions, spaced at least 48 hours (more often 1 week) apart. We’ll give you a clear protocol at your first visit so you know exactly what to expect.

FAQ

Is shockwave therapy covered by insurance?
Shockwave therapy is not currently covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare. Sessions are offered as a cash-pay service. We’ll give you transparent pricing at your first visit and we also accept CareCredit for multi-session packages.

How is this different from the shockwave at other clinics?
Many clinics offer radial shockwave, which disperses energy over a broad surface area. We use a focused ESWT unit — the same type studied in major clinical trials — which concentrates high-energy pulses precisely at the depth of the injured tissue. This matters most for deeper conditions like calcific shoulder tendinopathy, Achilles pathology, and hip bursitis.

Does it hurt?
Most patients experience a firm pulsing pressure during treatment. Over the most inflamed areas it can feel intense — but treatment is brief (5–10 minutes of actual shockwave delivery), and we adjust intensity in real time. Some patients experience mild soreness for 24–48 hours afterward, which is a normal sign that the healing response has been activated.

How quickly will I notice results?
Some patients notice improvement after the first session. Most see meaningful progress by sessions 2–3. Full results are typically assessed at 6–8 weeks after completing a treatment series.

Who is not a good candidate?
Shockwave is not appropriate for patients who are pregnant, have a blood clotting disorder, are on blood thinners, have a pacemaker, or have an active infection or cancer in the treatment area. We’ll review your health history at your consult to confirm you’re a good fit.
